Atlético Madrid almost certainly acquires World Cup standout for relatively low transfer fee

Atlético Madrid has likely once again strengthened its squad with a purchase, that on paper, is worth significantly more than what they are paying for it. After previously securing Antoine Griezmann from FC Barcelona for twenty million euros, they are now on the verge of acquiring Sofyan Amrabat from Fiorentina for a similarly low amount, as reported by the French newspaper L'Équipe.

It has been evident for some time that Amrabat wanted a transfer to a bigger club. The defensive midfielder made a standout impression during the recent World Cup with his national team, Morocco, which was only eliminated in the semi-finals. Barcelona was among the clubs mentioned as a potential next destination, but according to L'Équipe, Atlético Madrid, their competitor, is running off with the number six.

Amrabat is said to have already reached a personal agreement with the third-place team from last season, and negotiations between Fiorentina and Atlético are progressing well. Amrabat has one year remaining on his contract with Viola, which means the Italians cannot demand his full market value. While Transfermarkt estimates his value at thirty million euros, Amrabat is likely to leave for for ten million less.

Coach Diego Simeone, partly due to the imminent departure of Geoffrey Kondogbia, wants to add an additional physically strong midfielder who excels in winning balls for his team. Kondogbia's sale is expected to bring in five million euros, which will contribute to funding Amrabat's arrival. Ultimately, Amrabat was chosen over Leandro Paredes from Paris Saint-Germain and Guido Rodriguez from Real Betis.

Previously, Los Colchoneros managed to attract Antoine Griezmann for twenty million euros from FC Barcelona. The French forward had moved to the current champions in 2019 for 120 million but failed to make a lasting impact. Atlético had already loaned their prodigal son back for the past two years, and this summer, he will return permanently to the Wanda Metropolitano for only one-sixth of his selling price.
