The 2022/2023 season ended in great celebration for Sevilla. The Spanish club won the Europa League and secured direct qualification for the Champions League next season. However, just a few weeks after that success, Sevilla is facing a major crisis. The financial problems are so severe that the entire selection has been put up for sale.
According to the Spanish media outlet Marca, Sevilla president José Castro Carmona has put the entire selection on the market. The debt burden is so high that selling players is necessary to stay afloat. One or two big transfers are not enough. The total amount of debt is said to be around 90 million euros. To repay the debt, many players need to be sold and replaced with cheaper alternatives.
Victor Orta, the newly appointed sports director, faces a huge task. He must provide coach José Luis Mendilibar with a squad capable of competing for the league title, the cup and the Champions League. There is a possibility that Lucas Ocampos will not be part of that project. The former Ajax player has the second-highest market value in the squad, estimated at twelve million euros. Youssef En-Nesyri tops the list with a value of twenty million euros. Nemanja Gudelj and Karim Rekik, both former Eredivisie players, are valued at four million euros each according to the website Transfermarkt.
