Nick Kyrgios is known as the enfant terrible of men's tennis. The Australian has built up a large fan base due to his immense talent and weird antics, but almost the world could have stopped enjoying him. Kyrgios revealed in the Netflix series "Break Point" that he thought about committing suicide in 2019, after losing against Rafael Nadal in the second round of Wimbledon.
Kyrgios says he was admitted to a mental institution after his 1-3 loss against the Spaniard. This was because he thought about ending his life. "I sincerely thought about committing suicide," Kyrgios said. "I lost at Wimbledon. I woke up and my father was sitting on my bed, crying coldly. That opened my eyes: I couldn't go on like this."
The current world number 25 reported to the facility in London with depression and suicidal thoughts. "I went to the mental institution in London to get rid of the problems. I was drinking, using drugs, losing family and pushing my friends away."
The Australian then wore some kind of sleeve over his arm for a while. That had nothing to do with a tattoo or physical pain, which was originally thought. "You could see I was in pain. My whole arm was covered in scars. That's why I wore that sleeve, to hide it. That pressure, all the eyes on me, I just couldn't take it. I hated the person I was."
Last year, Kyrgios made it to the final of Wimbledon, in which he lost to Novak Djokovic. Then he suffered a knee injury, which even required surgery. Last Tuesday, he finally made his return, at the ATP of Stuttgart, against Wibing Yu (64). He lost in the first round 7-5, 6-3 to the Chinese.
